Half Awake in Reykjavík

The self-titled album from NYC-based indie pop band Stargroves is rich with ambitious compositions and catchy melodies.

One highlight from the record is "Half Awake in Reykjavík," which glides along with a perky piano loop that gives the song a theatrical quality, making it sound as though it could have been plucked directly from a movie.

Initially, the focus is on the words of singer Teddy Watson, who creates vivid imagery with lines like, "Buried in light snow / Chasing the strange, shivering lights." The arrangement grows more layered as strings and drums kick in and the song builds to a musical peak.

"Half Awake in Reykjavík" is one of the more straightforward pop songs on the album, but it still packs plenty of surprises into its four minutes. Nearly each time Watson finishes a verse, the music moves in a new direction, capped off by a kaleidoscope of synths and guitars leading into a cinematic closing section that twinkles like stars in the Icelandic night sky.

Lyrics

Pick out a gravestone
‘Cause this is a fine place to lie
Buried in light snow
Chasing the strange shivering lights
And if you need sulfur
If you need stars in your mid-day stroll
Then turn up the laughter
‘cause kid I can see it in your eyes
That you don’t know (you don’t know)
Just why you feel so alone
And when I’m state-side
I’ll trade all my days for rabid nights
Till I meet the right girl
And answer the phones from nine to five
Yeah but one day I’ll wake up
Lost in this hindsight and in her arms
And I’ll get on the next bus
Leaving for anyplace that’s closer to
The place I wrote this song
Oh I know those sightless eyes
They’re lost in this skull of mine
Up late on a Tuesday night
Canvassing power lines
Oh I’m not your average guy
My stars are out of sight
The caverns are awful nice
But I hear the absurd mice urge to
Move it along now
You’d best count your years
And turn your eyes
Yeah I know it’s a strange town
But kid this should come as no surprise
Believe me one day you’ll wake up
Remember your face is lined with age
But you talk like a young buck
And you’ll turn around so fast the
Fixtures in your mind will fall away
Oh I know those sightless eyes
Are lost in this skull of mine
Up late on a Tuesday night
Canvassing power
